SECCA Congratulates Cook Government, Eyes Regional Partnership
8 April 2025
The Mayors of the South East Corridor Councils Alliance (SECCA) congratulate Premier Roger Cook and the WA Labor Government on their re-election and look forward to partnering with the new Government to deliver tangible outcomes for communities across Perth’s South East metropolitan region.
Representing the Cities of Armadale, Canning, Gosnells and the Town of Victoria Park, SECCA is committed to positioning the region as one of Western Australia’s most sustainable urban corridors.
Key to this vision is collaboration with the State Government across three core SECCA priorities: urban greening, community infrastructure, and energy transition.
To advance urban greening, SECCA urges the State to regulate tree retention, to work collaboratively to increase tree and plant stock, and to activate under-utilised Stateowned land within the corridor to increase our tree canopy.
This effort will complement the Government’s $16.9 million commitment to plant one million new trees by 2035 and to achieve the 30 per cent tree canopy target by 2040.
Improving community liveability is vital for local governments and access to improved community infrastructure – particularly sport and recreation facilities, is fundamental to achieving that outcome.
Whilst SECCA acknowledges the $186 million state government commitment to fund new and upgraded sporting facilities across the State, the funding commitments for Perth’s important south-east corridor need a further boost to meet the future needs of our growing population.
Although the south east corridor is home to 20 per cent of Perth’s population, vital projects remain unfunded. That is despite 43 per cent of households having children and a projected 33 per cent population surge expected over the next 20 years.
High-quality infrastructure is essential to supporting growth and community wellbeing, and SECCA is ready to collaborate with the State to review and help shape the next iteration of the State Sporting Infrastructure Plan.
Energy transition is vital to sustainability. With nearly half of the homes in the SECCA corridor already harnessing solar power, SECCA requests the State Government to collaborate in order to create a tailored roadmap that will support business investment in energy transition.
This collaborative effort will strengthen the outcomes envisioned from the State’s $387 million Home Battery Scheme and the $60 million clean energy investment via the Investment Attraction Fund.
SECCA remains committed to working across the public and private sectors to ensure the region grows sustainably, equitably, and strategically.
